#19: Learning to Act Politically. Youth Agency and Empowerment with Georg Marschnig
In this episode of Didaktik:Dialog, I talk with Georg Marschnig, Professor of History Didactics and Civic Education at the University of Graz. The conversation focuses on agency and the capacity for political action among young people, and on the question of how schools can inspire not just reflection but actual political engagement. We discuss why political learning in school so often remains theoretical, and how young people can physically experience what it means to take a public stance through actions in public space. Georg also talks about a two-and-a-half-year project centred on a forgotten memorial to a Nazi-era end-of-war crime in Graz. Together with historians and local political actors, his students renegotiated the meaning of this memorial. An example of how historical and political learning come together, and how young people learn to deal with resistance and compromise along the way.
