In this episode of Didaktik:Dialog, I talk with Katharina Anzengruber, Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. The conversation focuses on the potential of music and the arts for dealing with societal challenges such as the climate crisis, and on how music education can help young people experience themselves as self-effective. We discuss why artistic approaches can make facts tangible in a different way, and how songwriting or experimental composition give young people a voice to express their worries and fears. Katharina also talks about an interdisciplinary project on the topic of soil that brought together physics, biology, songwriting and photography. And about a project on mobility in which students made field recordings and composed a kind of “future music” from them. Examples of how learning spaces can look that make the complexity of societal issues genuinely tangible.
