In this episode of Didaktik:Dialog, I talk to Beatrice Müller, Professor of Linguistically Inclusive Education and Multilingualism at KPH Wien/Niederösterreich. We discuss sprachliche Bildung, that is, linguistically inclusive teaching in all subjects, and German as a second language. The focus is on how teaching can build on the linguistic resources of all learners. We discuss the criticism of Deutschförderklassen, the separate German language support classes in Austria, and why German language support is only one part of sprachliche Bildung. Beatrice also explains why all teaching happens mainly through language and how teachers can make the language demands of their subject visible. She shares an example from primary school, where children first speak rhymes and poems, then examine them, and finally rewrite them. And an example from mathematics, where a short video gives students an anchor for abstract content. Examples of how experiencing, thinking and acting connect language learning and subject learning.
